The third weekend of Mohawk Trail Concerts will begin Friday, July 30, with a special memorial tribute to the late dynamic horn player and Franklin County resident, James Buffington. Buffington was what is widely known in music circles as a session man, a highly sought-after recording studio musician. An internationally reknowned french horn player, he was equally comfortable with classical music or jazz and recorded extensively with both. Music by Bach, Ravel, Mozart and several of the jazz greats will be offered in both the Friday evening preview rehearsal and the Saturday evening concert by Buffingtons contemporaries and friends. Horn players Earl Chapin and John Clark, two musicians who recorded often with Buffington, will be on hand to lead the tribute.

Chapin has recorded chamber music with Stravinsky, jazz with Charlie Mingus and performed in numerous Broadway shows, including Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story. Clark has replaced Buffington as the top studio french horn player in New York City. He has recorded two albums, the most recent of which, Song of Light is on Hidden Meaning records. Clark has written a piece for jazz quartet especially for this concert. The first half of the July 30 and 31 concerts will be classical, with a Mozart quintet for horn and strings, and a Bach trio sonata.
